Overview

Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Barnes-Jewish Hospital's staff is composed of full-time academic faculty and community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by a house staff of residents, interns, fellows and other medical professionals. Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

The department consists of specialty-trained RNs, many with vascular access certifications, who place vascular access devices (PIVs, midlines, PICC lines) using both traditional and ultrasound-guided techniques. Staff are skilled in difficult access, device insertion, and comprehensive care, including assessment, maintenance, and troubleshooting such as declotting and resolving mechanical issues, while supporting education, ensuring high-quality, evidence-based patient care, and preserving patients’ long-term vascular health and integrity.

The department also promotes continuous improvement of multidisciplinary care standards, safety, and patient outcomes across BJC by identifying, implementing, and sustaining innovative best practices, while serving as a communication bridge among vascular access teams.
