Position Summary
The Pharmacy Technician I supports pharmacists in the preparation, compounding, and dispensing of medications while ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, this role contributes to the safe, accurate, and timely delivery of pharmacy services to patients and customers. The Pharmacy Technician I is responsible for maintaining medication inventory, supporting pharmacy operations, and upholding quality, safety, and customer service standards.
Essential Responsibilities
Pharmacy Operations
- Enter and maintain accurate patient and medication information within EPIC and other pharmacy systems as appropriate.
- Assist in the preparation, compounding, packaging, and dispensing of medications under pharmacist supervision.
- Retrieve, count, measure, and, when required, mix medications in accordance with established procedures.
- Accurately fill medication orders and prescriptions in a timely manner.
- Receive, stock, and maintain drug inventory while ensuring medication security and proper storage.
- Prepare medications for delivery or shipment following pharmacist verification.
- Deliver medications to patient care and nursing units in a timely and professional manner.
- Retrieve unused medications from patient care areas or designated pharmacy locations and process patient credits when appropriate.
- Adhere to hazardous waste handling and disposal procedures.
- Monitor assigned areas for expired or outdated medications and support quality assurance initiatives.
- Maintain the cleanliness, safety, and proper functioning of pharmacy equipment and work areas.
- Utilize sound judgment to prioritize tasks and respond to patient care needs effectively.
- Participate in departmental meetings, huddles, and other team communication activities.
Orientation, Training, and Professional Development
- Complete all required hospital, regulatory, and department-specific education, training, and competency requirements within established timeframes.
- Participate in departmental orientation and technician training programs.
- Successfully complete pharmacy competencies for assigned work areas.
- Complete EPIC and/or Willow training, as applicable.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and learning opportunities.

- Adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service and communication skills in all interactions with patients, customers, and colleagues.
- Communicate pertinent information effectively during shift transitions and throughout the workday.

- Maintain professional appearance standards, including proper hygiene, required personal protective equipment (PPE), and adherence to dress code policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
Licensure
- Active registration and good standing with the applicable State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician required, or the ability to obtain registration by the first day of employment.
- Must complete all registration requirements, including fingerprinting and any required FBI background checks.
Experience
- One (1) year of pharmacy-related experience preferred; not required.
Certification
- Successful completion of pharmacy department orientation and training requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of pharmacy operations, medication handling, and regulatory requirements.
- Proficiency in utilizing pharmacy technology, automation systems, and workflow management tools.
- Ability to operate robotic dispensing equipment, automated dispensing cabinets, and related pharmacy technologies as applicable.
- Ability to perform basic troubleshooting of automated pharmacy equipment and associated software.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Effective organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
- Ability to prioritize responsibilities and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work under time constraints while maintaining quality and safety standards.
